Conservation With Kate

I am currently writing from my new room at university, with my first lecture of second year being tomorrow morning and so, with regret, I think it's time to accept that Summer 2016, is over.

Summer 2016 has proven to be one of the greatest (I say this every summer) but it's true, since every summer I seem to be doing amazing things and having an amazing time. This summer has been a stand out for me though because I have tried so many things out for the first time, and been ticking away at my bucket list.
This was my first summer blogging, and I've loved it! I've enjoyed writing, and hearing from people who have read it and having conversations with some incredible people because of it. I'm so glad I decided to start this blog, and look forward to what happens next.
Obviously the most unbelievable thing I did this summer, which is something I did for the first time, was volunteer with big cats. Volunteering on a wild cat sanctuary was like a dream. I will never forget it, and hope to do it again. I learnt so much and had an amazing time. I got to do some life-chaning things (for the first time) such as getting up close and personal with lions, cheetahs,  and caracals, and learning individual animals characteristics and personalities. On a tour once I was asked how to tell the difference between some of the lions, and I produced a lengthy list of every single difference. The owner said to me it was clear where I was spending my free time.. I loved getting to know the animals individually, and being able to know them all by name. I miss them everyday and am constantly looking back at pictures. I met some incredible people as well and made friends from all over the world, which really excites me and I hope to go travelling around to see them all one day. May have been my first time working with big cats, but it won't be my last!

Another first for me from South Africa was bungee jumping!! Much to my mothers horror, I loved it. Skydiving has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, and I still plan to do that one day (hopefully in Australia) but bungee jumping was never a "must-do" for me. However, as soon as I found out it was an option I had to do it. I am the type of person who doesn't like to say no to things, and I know I will always regret the things I don't do. I wasn't at all convinced I would even enjoy the jump, but I knew I had to try. I was terrified on the top of the platform, and had to take several deep breaths before jumping, but once I was off, I was loving it. So happy I did it, and would recommend it to anyone who's unsure. Sorry mum and dad...

In fact, it was the first time I spent any real time in Johannesburg. Although it wasn't all smooth sailing, and my wallet was stolen, I did really enjoy the day I spent having a tour of the city. Obviously the bungee was a highlight, but I also really enjoyed Constitutional Hill. If you have time in Johannesburg ever, it's a well worth a visit.

Back in the UK I did some things for the first time as well. I tried water skiing. Turns out, I'm not very good at water skiing, but I had fun. A group of 6 of us went out on a boat for a day and had a go. Obviously the boat's owner was very good at it, and we all optimistically thought it would be quite easy. Some of the others were surprisingly good at it, but I was not one of them. I love the sea though and was having a great time trying to stand up. I did get up for about a second so I'm happy. Would love to try it again, but maybe with some gloves.

Although it was not my first time in Canada, it was my first time visiting Thornbury, my first Canada wedding, and my first time meeting the newest member to my family, who was born in July! I loved Thornbury and felt lucky to have been there. Since it's such a small town, I think it's somewhere I would never have even known about if I didn't have family there, and yet it's such a beautiful place!

Of course, there were other amazing things I did this summer, that I had done before. I went to my friend's festival for the second year in a row. I had a great time as always, and is definitely going to be my bank holiday weekend fix for many years to come. I went on a one day safari in SA, and saw rhinos and water buffalo among other things. That was one of the best days of the summer for me (read more..).

The best thing about this summer was meeting so many new people. I've made some friends for life, and had some unforgettable experiences. Thank you to everyone who's made this summer one of the best ones yet!

It's been a very busy week and so the blog has been a little neglected - sorry - but I have had so much to do since coming home from university and going to South Africa.. tomorrow!!! I have been packing all day and while I find packing somewhat stressful, it makes me so excited! I cannot believe it's tomorrow. AHH!

This trip is the first time I'm travelling completely alone.. I'm really excited and also slightly terrified. It's the first time I'll fly alone, but... it's not the first time I will not know anyone. When I went to South Africa in 2014 it was my first time volunteering abroad and I didn't meet any of my fellow volunteers until arriving at Heathrow airport, and now they are some of my best friends who I talk to almost everyday. Meeting new people is not really worrying me, because I know how easy it is, and it's likely I'll be with like-minded people who are in the same position as me. I'm only really nervous about the actual travelling bit.. you know, getting there in one piece without losing anything.

I've been told where I am staying has wifi, and so I plan to blog my trip! I'm really excited about this for something I can look back on, and something my friends and family can read while I'm out there (especially to stop everyone from worrying that I accidentally got on the wrong plane and/or lost all my luggage); and something you can read and (hopefully) enjoy!

I can't believe how quickly it's come around, particularly as it shows that I have finished my first year of university! Everyone says first year is the best year, and it really will be hard to beat! But summer is one of my favourite times of year and it'll be lovely to spend some time at home post-Africa with my friends and family here, and being back with my dog is the best.

The best thing about first year has been living in halls. I was so lucky with my halls as everyone was so lovely and we all got very close. I'm really going to miss having all my friends so close by and being able to pop to another flat in slippers, a dressing gown and a cup of tea just for a chat.

Since exams finished it's all been pretty hectic. I stayed in Southampton for a couple weeks just to spend time with my friends where we could just relax and not have to worry about anything. We went out a lot, and spent some time in the sunshine. I also visited London a couple times, which featured a visit to my favourite museum: The Natural History Museum; a Buddy Holly show, and the 21st of an old friend. I have now been home for a few days as well before jetting off to check in with my sister, parents and dog.

So that was just a quick update as to why I haven't posted for a while, and why (hopefully) you will soon be bombarded with Africa posts and pictures on here, as well as all my social medias! After my trip I plan to continue my Endangered Species series, and much more but if you have any requests let me know through the Contact Me tab!

Hope you enjoy are having/ have a wonderful summer wherever you are doing whatever you do!

Much love

x

As a way to procrastinate revising for my exams I have been scrolling through Instagram and Twitter. Not surprisingly I follow Leonardo DiCaprio on both Instagram and Twitter, and he recently posted a picture of two rhinos for World Environment Day (https://www.instagram.com/p/BFcX_lsqxDs/?taken-by=leonardodicaprio). From here I followed the hashtag #WorldEnvironmentDay and found many photos of rhinos.

I commented on Leonardo DiCaprio's post asking his opinion on legalising the trade. Of course I don't expect him to reply; he's a busy man getting thousands of comments daily, but it is still worth commenting for anyone to read. I said how important I think #LiftTheBan is and some reasons why.

I commented like this on a few other posts and I realised while doing this how little people know about this issue, and I expect many others which are similar.

People don't know that rhinos can survive without their horns, let alone successfully and happily. To understand this is fundamental for people to get behind supporting the idea of legalising trade. I, rather naively, didn't fully appreciate how little some people know.

This is of course, not their fault. They are simply not taught about this. You can be highly educated,  or extremely intelligent, and yet know little to nothing on the rhino crisis, or the situation of many other species.

This got me thinking about how important awareness is. And not just for rhinos, but for everything. If people don't know the options available, then they can't support them.

Continuing the rhino horn trade example, if people don't know the positive impacts of legalising the trade, then they will instinctively be against it. They will see it as cruel, or even think it's not possible.

People often ask me what they can do. Donations (as long as they are going to the right people) is an obvious answer. But I always tell them to tell as many people as possible about the cruelties, injustices and solutions. The more people that know, the better! People cannot support something they know nothing about.

And so I urge you, if you have a burning issue you want support with, tell people! Post it on social media, tell your friends - maybe start your own blog! Be a voice for the voiceless!

Having not posted in a week, to post twice in 2 days seems strange but I couldn't not mention Sir David Attenborough on his 90th birthday.

People often ask the question: "if you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be?" This to me is one of the easiest questions there is to answer. Sir David Attenborough has always been, and always will be, the top of my list.

It won't surprise anyone that he is my hero. I have watched his documentaries for as long as I can remember, and they are always my first go-to TV if I'm bored. He makes me proud to be British, and has inspired me for my whole life. His work and passion for the natural world is beautiful, and he has brought wildlife conservation, endangered species and climate change into the public eye and educated thousands (if not millions) of people on these pressing issues and made them care.

I hope one day to meet him, and hope he continues to inspire people for another 90 years, and many more.

Happy Birthday, Sir.

one of my favourite quotes
I found this on Facebook and so an unsure of the source :)
